I came across this book by the recommendation of the author Daniel Pinchbeck. Published in the “Forerunners: Ideas First” series of short books from the University of Minnesota Press, it’s exceedingly approachable—well shy of 100 pages. In blockchain-time, one might consider it archaic, coming from the generation of yore: 2016—although it remains as cogent and timely as ever. David Golumbia is a professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University, and text comes across as academic in nature, with countless citations. Before diving into the meat of the subject, I offer the caveat that both the book, and this review, focus primarily on the Bitcoin community, and less so on the blockchain space in general. As the dominant incumbent and original blockchain pioneer, Bitcoin is understandably more conservative than many of the newer blockchain upstarts, to which I don’t give attention in this missive. As the subtitle broadcasts, the thesis of the book is that Bitcoin is an instrument of right-wing extremism. Having been a participant in the blockchain space for the past year-and-a-half, it comes as no surprise to me that academics find the movement generally right-wing. The cypherpunk movement that birthed the blockchain community is firmly libertarian. The last two sentences of the book aptly sum up Golumbia’s arguments:"Recent events have shown repeatedly that we discount the power of engineers and/or ideologies to realize their political visions through software design at our peril. What is required to combat that power is not more wars between algorithmic platforms and individuals who see themselves as above politics, but a reassertion of the political power that the blockchain is specifically constructed to dismantle." (Page 76)The relationship between money, markets, and the state are at the heart of Golumbia’s explorations. Does government enhance or curtail freedom? Whereas the left would suggest the former, the right sides with the latter."The cyberlibertarian belief that ‘governments should not regulate the internet’ really makes sense only if it is true that government exists to curtail rather than to promote human freedom. Yet in most non-rightist political theory, government exists in no small part to promote human freedom.” (page 6)Golumbia supports this argument that the blockchain community is dominated by right-wing discourse with ample evidence. He then moves on to an exploration of inflation and store of value. During my entire time in the blockchain space, I’ve repeatedly needed to remind people that inflation is defined by prices. Milton Friedman’s unrealistic claims that inflation is driven by supply are rife throughout the space, and Golumbia’s research helps put my daily experience into a larger political perspective.“From the farthest reaches of the explicit anarcho-capitalist fringe…to the supposedly responsible mainstream, we find the same insistence on the monetary nature of inflation and the concomitant immunity of Bitcoin to inflation due to its limited total supply.” (page 19)Neither economic history, nor Bitcoin’s extreme volatility, support such claims. Bitcoin has gone through regular and periodic cycles of 5x inflation (hyperinflation). Limited supply does not guarantee high prices. On this thread, beyond a few asides about the concentration of Bitcoin holdings, Golumbia fails to explore the effects of constrained-supply on wealth inequality. When token architectures can only raise funds for their capitalization via regressive and severely limited token supplies that offer the chance of 10x, 100x, or 1000x returns for initial investors or participants, the demographic results are that Crypto Valley makes Silicon Valley look like an egalitarian utopia. It almost goes without saying that extreme wealth inequality is generally associated with right-wing sympathies. This brings us to the conspiracy theories surrounding the Federal Reserve, and monetary cosmology.“Bitcoin is obviously built to escape the kind of regulation the Federal Reserve exerts over…’money supply regulation’…, yet this is frequently taken to mean that it somehow inherently escapes…’legal regulation.’” (pages 37-38)Golumbia dissects the intermingled meanings of the term “regulation.” On the one hand, it relates to value, and on the other, legality. Golumbia is right to assert that the space often conflates the two. This likely ties back to the revolutionary outlook of many crypto enthusiasts; they’re as concerned about the Fed influencing value as they are about the SEC regulating issuance. One of the recurrent conversations in the space regards the role of the state, not only with regard to cryptocurrency regulation, but more broadly. I regularly hear questions like, “are we headed for a state-less future?” My assumption is, no, we’re not. But opinions, aside Golumbia raises an important part about the definition of money. Many crypto enthusiasts regularly refer to and aspire to have Bitcoin and other tokens treated as “money.” And yet, according to Modern Monetary Theory, money is defined by its issuance by a sovereign government.“Nation-state sovereignty and the very idea of money are inextricably linked in our world, and so the notion of money that is not issued by a nation-state is essentially a contradiction.” (page 54)In other words, cryptocurrency could be money or could be decentralized, but not both. In some ways, this is a semantic conversation, but it gets to some of the heart of blockchain ethics and political theory—are decentralization and democracy compatible? And when I say democracy, I’m not referring to the deeply compromised situation we currently find ourselves in here in the US, but in the aspirational sense of the word used by David Graeber (in his book, “The Democracy Project,”) and Astra Taylor (in her documentary, “What is Democracy?").And this brings us around to Golumbia’s concluding thoughts regarding politics and technology, and their tenuous relationship:“Bitcoin and the blockchain do a remarkable job of reinforcing the view that the entire global history of political thought and action…has already been jettisoned through the introduction of any number of digital technologies.” (page 74)“It is hard to see how this [non-right] minority can resist the political values that are very literally coded into the software itself.” (page 75)The CEO at my blockchain startup, Gregory Landua, recently read Anand Giridharadas’ “Winner Take All,” and commented that it brought the necessity of government into the forefront for him. Corporate tyranny is already beginning to overpower government tyranny, and, however much we might despise the fact, the state continues to be the best instrument we have to mitigate the abuses of power rife within our current global corporatocracy.Although Gulmbia has deftly performed the task of convincing us of his assertion that the blockchain space is dominated by right-wing rhetoric, he leaves it up to us to determine the more important question: do we care? I can attest from personal experience that many members of the blockchain community are deeply disenchanted with the both the content and tone of political discourse on both the right and the left. Without noticing, does that de facto mean we’re inheriting the conservative biases of our forefathers in economically liberal communities? Within a community so set on transforming the world, can we afford such naïvete? These are the questions Golumbia leaves us with, and questions that merit significant cogitation.

Forget the past stated claims that Bitcoin is only used by slackers living in their mother's basement and masterbating to anime. The enlightenment is here. Bitcoin is the result of right wing conspiracy theorists and extremists that reject the saintly and profound conclusions that legacy financial systems have blessed us with.Inflation is good for the economy and reckless central banks do not steal value by carelessly printing more and more money. The author offers no rationale for this claim and cites few direct sources. The author also ignores the dubious orgions of the Federal Reserve and totally ignores its fallacy. If there is an lucid and articulate argument against Bitoin, this is not it. This paranoid work belongs in the dust bin along with the other misadventures of the legacy monitary systems.

Just an outstanding and very readable explanation of the ways in which Bitcoin misses the mark, both in concept and in execution, and rests on faulty assumptions about how currency can and should work.

This book provides some interesting insights by placing Bitcoin in the modern American political context. It correctly cites some important ideological predecessors which may not be so obvious such as Hayak, Friedman, Rothbard, Cyberlibertarians, Cypherpunks, and Crypto Anarchists. However, his conclusion only makes sense when viewed from the very narrow lens of modern American politics. This may be done on purpose, but it is an inherently flawed way of looking at a technology which has gone global. For example, the author often mistakenly equates "anti-government" as being strictly a right wing ideology but this is incorrect (i.e, in the 60's , being "anti-government" was a left wing thing).Any time the author mentions "central banking", he seems to only be referring to the "US Federal Reserve" as if that was the only central bank in the world. The fact is that many central banks have failed in the past, and is failing today (see Venezuela). That is not a leftist or rightist position, that is just reality. He also makes a huge and inexcusable omission of the 2008 financial crisis and the Occupy movement under which Bitcoin was created from. This omission is intellectually dishonest as the Occupy movement and "too big to fail" are leftist movements that parallels Bitcoin's development. In summary, the author's thesis is incorrect and over simplified. Even if he was correct, the viewpoint is so narrow (looking at Bitcoin in the current American political context) that his analysis has limited use.

Disclaimer: I am a real reviewer who actually purchased and read the book. I felt compelled to write my first review because I was annoyed in two ways: first, the clearly fake reviewers, second, the readers who came in with ridiculous expectations about the contents of the book.Second disclaimer: I am NOT a Tim worshiper. The 4-Hour Workweek is a sometimes unethical pipe dream that a couple people writers imitating Tim have made money on. For most of us, it contains a couple tricks to be more efficient at our 9-5. The 4-Hour Body is a relatively interesting and fun book on fitness and diet experimentation. I learned a few tips and tricks from it and really enjoyed reading about his experiences. I have read most of Tim's blog and consider it a sometimes better alternative to "Life Hacker".Those two disclaimers being said, this is a GREAT book if you come in with the right expectations. If you're looking for 600+ pages solely devoted to grocery shopping, prep, recipes, cooking and eating, you will not find it here. You'll find about 200-250 pages dedicated solely to such, and 200 more at least somewhat related--consisting of wilderness cooking and survival, great restaurants, 140 character recipes, and basic tools you need in the kitchen. At a macro level, the most useful cooking lessons are Tim's notes on equipment to have in your kitchen, his 10 easy recipes (most of which are really interesting/easy shortcuts), and the charts on spices that go with different countries. At a micro level, I picked up a few random tidbits from the 1/2-pagers on how to quickly defrost a steak, how to make the perfect cup of coffee, etc. The most important part of this section is that Tim teaches you HOW to cook, not just how to follow a recipe. The best part about his methodology is that he removes all roadblocks from the reader--the excessively expensive equipment, the hard to find ingredients, and the difficult cooking techniques are all put nicely out of mind with shortcuts and detailed pictures. The rest of the book, in my opinion, is actually more interesting. The first section is about a hundred pages are worth the price of admission alone. It details a method to learn anything efficiently--Tim is merely using cooking as a MEDIUM to teach this method. I've started applying this first section to learning a number of skills already. As the middle sections are the ones devoted to cooking and wilderness survival that I detailed above, the appendix is related to random skills and interesting "life hacks" that you can learn quickly. Yes, these feel like last-minute additions but if one thing is clear Tim actually cares about his readers, why not throw in these interesting pages--they do not detract from the focus as they are part of the appendix. If I can say one thing--buy this book. For me, I can see myself going back to it for years anytime I'd like to learn a new skill (be it with cooking or otherwise). If you want to learn HOW to cook taught in an unpretentious tone with easy to follow pictures, you'll find it here. If you're interested in shortcuts to learning complex skills, you'll find it here. If you just want to pick up a few cooking shortcuts, you will most definitely be delighted with this book. And lastly, if you are a fan of Tim and his other works, absolutely buy this book.Lastly, a note on format, BUY THE HARDCOVER. I bought the Kindle as well since it was on sale for just $4.99 on Amazon and it does not even come close to comparing to the hardcover version. This book is meant to have pages cut out and marked up, its detailed color pictures to be seen, etc.

I did like this book. However, I don't remember the last time I got a 10 lb. book in the mail aside from the old school Sears catalogs or a hardcover Webster's Dictionary.I appreciate why the book was so long since it includes a lot of "how-to" with recipes and other nitty-gritty information about food including how things are made (i.e. the process in which balsamic vinegar is made, how to kill a chicken, etc.). But, quite honestly, I didn't buy the book to learn how to cook. I hate cooking and I still do.What I did like about this book would be about the first 100 pages or so that teaches you how to learn anything at super fast speed. This includes languages, dancing, cooking, or anything else you want to learn...and fast. Tim is the first one I've ever seen to illustrate that you not need to have 10,000 hours of practice to become good at or an expert in almost anything provided that you understand how the "crash course" methodology works and Tim puts methodology together for you.And he explains it quite well. What I wish he would have done was split this into 2 books where he could teach people how to cook in one book and teach people "how to learn anything in 6 weeks or less" in another book. I would have bought the 2nd book and not bothered with the cooking book at all. It seems that the cooking part actually got in the way. Just when he was getting into the swing of things with how to learn something at a super fast speed, he'd throw some cooking crap in there and I'd have to find myself skimming through it just to continue on with what he was talking about with learning faster.I really did like his 2 principles of learning fast which are:1) Failure points - addressing the tripping points and how to work to eliminate/overcome them. These are the points in which people give up on any endeavor because it's too hard, complicated, etc.2) Margin of safety - picking the most important elements of whatever you're trying to do and making sure that if you choose well, even if your execution is off, you'll still be successful. He illustrates this by having you choose recipes well so that if you fail to make it even near perfect, the result will still be awesome. He also makes it clear that if you are going to become successful in anything, you have to give yourself an ultimatum of sorts. If you fail, what are the consequences? People who have no consequences for not meeting their goals usually don't meet their goals. He has some pretty awesome points on success that I've never read in any other type of book before, and I read a lot of success books. For that reason, I recommend this book. Even if you have no interest in cooking, read the book anyway for the first 1/4 of it where you can really learn how to change your life through learning and becoming successful at anything you want to in the shortest amount of time imaginable.

I bought this book mainly because the author claimed it would revolutionize my ability to learn. However, only the first section of three (and the shortest of all) was about the learning process. It was a summary of things that can easily be found in the internet. He repeats some of the famous, but somewhat suspect, claims like the 80/20 rule and how you can gain "fluency" in a language in 3 months by learning a very small subset of the most common words. The idea of breaking skills down at the beginning and focusing on them singularly and intensely in a piecewise manner was very interesting however. The second section applies his method to cooking. It is interesting, and it provides a very succinct type of cookbook style that would be very handy with more recipes. However I found it also to be somewhat of a surface treatment. The perfect example of what I mean is the treatment on knife skills. I think three different techniques were discussed, but the entire discussion was maybe a page or two. That is not nearly enough space to teach someone proper knife handling skills to julienne, dice, chop, and cube. The third section was the application of the method to hunting, gutting, and outdoorsman type activities. Frankly, I wasn't interested in this section and I skipped it.Overall I think the book was just okay. It was a surface treatment of how to become okay at things quickly. I think this is the perfect book for people who like to be "advanced beginners." The book didn't change my life, or my approach to learning at all. It was interesting, but not life changing as a the author likes to claim.

This book should have been titled dealing with deception in the workplace because that's exactly what the book is about. The information provided mixes military, government and intelligence agencies' interrogation techniques, scientific and academic data mixed with body language and micro-facial recognition to create what Meyer calls the BASIC method, a guide to lie-proof conversations, negotiations, and interviews. She claims that the techniques provided in the book can improve detection ability by 25% to 50%. The BASIC system is a way to structuring a conversation to get to the truth; the acronym stands for:B = Baseline behaviour, examining and comparing an individual current behaviour to what a person normally does, says or behave to compare it with what he does, says or behaves while being interviewed, interrogated or simply questioned about an issue of concern.A = Ask for open-ended questions.S = Study the Clusters of behaviour.I = Intuit the gaps, or what is not being said.C = Confirm. The book is structured in two parts. The first contains the basic techniques to detect deception trough verbal and non-verbal clues. To me, as a non-business person, this is the most useful and entertaining part of the book, and truly packed with useful information that will make you aware of deceptive behaviours. The second part is about creating healthy behaviour environment in the workplace by implementing structures and polices that promote honesty and trustworthiness, and effortlessly weed out deception, liars and double-faced people who play everybody to get power or money. This is very much business related. If you are a the head of a department, business, or corporation, you will find the strategies, advice and polices recommended in the book fantastic, sane and sound, it that can be said. Specially good are the items of advice on business negotiation and job interviews, which are two of the main areas where deception occurs.Appendix I is a sort of cheat-sheet about the main points presented in the first part of the book. I truly love it because it is useful and straight to the point. This is the core of the book in a nutshell.Appendix II is a test to check if our lie spotting skills are tuned; the solution to the questions are in the author's book websiteThe book is very good, well written, and clear to understand. Meyer is a very articulate writer and does a great job at conveying her message in away that is entertaining, informative and seriously usable, with plenty of specific information about how to spot deception, and how to deal with it. Liespotting tips that are spread throughout the book as short reminders of important points to remember, therefore, very helpful. Besides, photos are included to exemplify facial authentic and fake expressions; nothing like a photo to explain this sort of information. There are many real-life examples described in the book, but I thought they were useful. Some of the questions posed and answered are: > Why do we have a deception epidemic in our culture? > Do we lie more nowadays than in the past? > Why videoconferencing isn't the solution to deciding on new business ventures? > Why old tools and devices do not work? > Why being punctual is important? > Which verbal and non verbal clues show deception? and how do you mentally process them?Ah? Eh? What?> Meyer says that pupil dilation can be an indication of deception and arousal, but an addict to sex would also have pupils dilated? A person occasionally using substances would have their pupils dilated, no? Does this automatically turn them into deceptive people at the workplace? Just asking!> Some of the verbal clues that Meyer mention as signalling deception are actually things that I would say and do, honestly and sincerely, to voice my innocence!Kindle editionThe kindle edition is well done, with notes hyper-linked back and forward. However, one of the links in the book does not work, the one directing to Artanatomy, however the site is still up just with another URL.

I thought this book was a very good read and also informative. I think this book and the "Sociopath Next Door" should be read at an early age to help you in dealing with people. The world is full of people who lie, cheat and steal. If we can learn the traits of these people then we can learn to stay clear of them. In doing so we can save ourselves a lot of grief and aggravation, including $$$$. The TV show "Lie to Me" is what really got me interested in this subject. The book has ten chapters like The Deception Epidemic, Reading the Face, Reading the Body, Listening to the Words. It covers these and much more. You will gain knowledge that you can start using right away. The last chapter is called "Putting it all together".I look at people's eyes and watch their body language a whole lot more now when they are talking. There is a lot to learn about lies and this book is a great place to start.

I'm passionate about human behavior and this book was a neutral read, because I believe that the author targeted the wrong audience. This book is targeted towards corporate people who don't have any understanding or prior knowledge of human behavior and favors many subjective stories as evidence over the scientific data sources. Brace yourself for the obligatory corporate stories and business-scam scenarios, as they seem like the main theme when it comes to liars. The useful tips start in the middle of the book and only last a few pages, so feel free to skip the fluff and get to the meat and potatoes of deception leaks. The book works great for lavatory reading and should be placed on the tank lid for easy access.

I bought the book on the basis of the author's TED talk, which I loved. However, the book is a disappointment. The actual "liespotting" information is good, and very readable, but there's not enough of it. Then there is the filler that goes on and on. The filler material takes two forms: 1) topics that are only marginally related (for example, "Doing a deception audit at your corporation"...really? This is not of much interest in a book that presents itself as a how-to on discovering lies in personal interactions), and 2) stretching out the actual liespotting material with tiresome justifications telling you why it's a good thing to be able to spot lies. Telling me once is fine; telling me over and over is filler. The photos were a good idea. I would have liked to see more of them, though, and more subtle ones, as well.Whoever was editing this book must have been forcing the author to make it longer, rather than doing the better job of tightening it up and keeping the focus where it belongs. Good idea, good kernel of information, but poor execution.

Saw the TED Talk by the author which was enjoyable, but I expected more from the book. It claims to teach you how to spot lies using body language but after reading it I suspect it's the kind of skill you need to take a class on, or would be better suited to a video series. It's filled with pictures and examples too blatant or ridiculous to be of any real help. The book isn't as focused or thorough as it should be. The author is a skilled business woman but not a great author, and is more a book about business management than lie spotting. Not a lot of substance which she attempts to cover up with random facts, and handy 'lie spotting tips' sprinkled throughout. Not a great read but won't take you long to get through. If you read Malcolm Gladwell, whom the author references early on, you will be underwhelmed with the content. Skip it and just enjoy the TED Talk.
