I have completed the coursework at NYU for a certificate in career assessment and development and am going to be teaching a course on an overview of career assessments. Found this book to be invaluable in filling in some gaps on assessment and career development. One of the authors of this book, Howard Figler, does't care for assessment except for asking questions, reflective listening etc. I tend to agree with the co-author, Richard Nelson Bolles, who believes assessments are valuable in exploring possibilities which come up in assessments.I have done assessments with a number of folks assessing values, skills, types, interest, strengths, passions etc. Loved reading the authors' perspectives with their collective 60-70 years in the career counseling field. These assessments are NOT scientific, the authors note. However, I find they can open thought and detect patterns. Often they affirm what clients intuit about themselves and give them confidence to explore something which fascinates them. This book is divided into nine sections: Goals, History of the Career Field, How to Survive and Prosper as a Career Coach, Tools, Special Problems, For Clients Who Want to Be on Their Own, Values, Spirituality and The Future of the field. Chapters read like articles on topics so there are some gaps. However, what is here I found so valuable and deep. It's not a how-to book although it has some how-to sections. Some of the topics which I found most valuable:* the 12 most important skills a career counselor uses* the six objectives of career counseling* history of ideas and events in career counseling and development* how to use just one hour of counseling* spirituality and career counselingThe authors also list online assessments and other books, worksheets and resources. There is not a lot on technology and career development such as LinkedIn. However, Mr. Bolles updates his book WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE every year so there is more in there. This book might be better for counselors-coaches new to career development and assessments. But experienced counselors and coaches might find something useful to glean from these authors' experiences running a career center, writing books and speaking on the topic. Regarding the spirituality section, I found it helpful as some clients do believe in God (many Americans do) and believe God has given them gifts or purpose here. They want to know their faith can be part of their career journey which I respect. 5 stars for me - maybe fewer stars if you wanted something more sequential and more on assessments. It does mention the Holland Code, and has exercises for assessing skills and values. I will be using much of the information in here for my class.

This is one of the most biased, one sided Handbooks I have ever read. I have been a Vocational Counselor for over 30 years and this book is TRASH! Not that there isn't a great deal of information. I do especially like how the history of Career Counseling was handled. But the author's bias against interest, aptitude and ability testing is abysmal, as was the attempt to insert a religious bias. Shame on Bolles for having his name associated with this book.

It is what it says, but very light in content and truly geared towards someone learning the craft va those traveling through their career journey

Very handy book.

Good basic trainer.

Uses examples from this book in my seminars.

great quality

This is a great book about not just helping people find a job, but helping them find themselves and fulfillment in their career. For the job seeker this book is also a great tool for understanding both yourself and the career counsel you may seek.

“Roger Marshall’s book…shows gardening enthusiasts how to grow colorful flowers, tropical fruits and abundant vegetables year-round, no matter what the weather is.”   Los Angeles Daily News, January 27, 2007   “Marshall leads readers through myriad options and provides well-organized details on the whys and wherefores of each, along with how you (or a contractor) can design and build the greenhouse to suit your gardening needs.”   Arkansas Democrat, March 3, 2007   “The book’s strengths are its many and varied schematics and highly detailed, step-by-step instructions for building growing structures, from cold frames for just a few vegetables to a large free-standing greenhouse that can double as an entertainment area…There’s even a four-page check-list of what to plan for, materials to buy, and approximate costs.” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, February 25, 2007   “If you are interested in building a greenhouse, here is the definitive do-it-yourself guide. This is the only guide needed to plan, situate and build your dream greenhouse.”   Lexington Herald-Leader, June 30, 2007   “If you’ve ever contemplated adding a greenhouse to your property but didn’t know where to start, How to Build Your Own Greenhouse by Roger Marshall will point you in the right direction.” The American Gardener, Sept.-Oct. 2007   “The author gives gardeners the inspiration to take their hobby indoors for the winter months, and then he gives them the means to do so, with step-by-step instructions….Nothing seems insurmountable under the guidance of master gardener Marshall.” Berkshire Eagle

I have had a greenhouse in the past. One that I built. I was looking for a book that discussed new technology in greenhouse construction. This books does, but it geared more for the novice. Anyone that has never had a greenhouse, or built a greenhouse, this is a very good book. As with most books, there is something you can get out of them if you are looking for that. I like the book, recommend it for anyone thinking of owning a greenhouse, and have learned a few things I will incorporate in my newest greenhouse

If you have an interest in building your own greenhouse, or updating, adding features to an existing one, this is a great resource. It is broken down so that it helps one to understand what their needs may be, the areas of the country where one lives and the requirements for the different species of plants. There are also some basic plans, but one would have to be fairly comfortable with tools and wood to take on a project like this. Having said that, the book also goes into kits and what to and not to look for.

This book thoroughly goes over all kinds of design considerations about building a greenhouse. I like having lots of information and details, which you'll definitely get from the book, from the obvious to the not-so-obvious.I am a fairly handy person, but I like books that don't assume any background or knowledge, because that way you can be sure that you're not going to miss anything. Every project seems to have some weird "gotcha" that comes out of the blue, so it's great to consider everything. For example, I had not thought about the obvious problems with humidity in a greenhouse and how that might affect my choice of materials, in regard to rust or kind of wood. The book goes through all the pros and cons of different kinds of material for letting through light, and the pros and cons of different structures and designs based on your climate and latitude, the kinds of plants you'll grow, and so forth.BTW, I bought some of the cheap Kindle books about building hoop houses for <$300, and found that this book contained similar information, and better designs. So, I'd consider the book even if you're thinking of doing a cheap greenhouse, even though much of the material won't be relevant, so at least you have a sense of the options. My only complaint, and this is quite unrealistic, is that the book doesn't discuss much about aquaponics, which is the idea of growing fish and plants together. This is the main reason I want to build a greenhouse, and an aquaponics greenhouse has unique design considerations, in that you're probably not going to transplant anything but instead will likely grow the plants entirely in the greenhouse, and of course, there's a lot of plumbing going on. To be fair, the author does touch on the subject a bit. I didn't expect him to write about aquaponics at all, and I still found the book tremendously helpful.I definitely recommend it.

great book that covers all the things you need to plan for when building a greenhouse. I have read several books and this is the most comprehensive and practical guide.

Very thorough, with checklists, material sheets, building plans and pros and cons for each type of greenhouse. It even goes into tutorials on bricklaying, contracting out and many more. One stop shopping for greenhouse construction

This book is very well written, great designs and helpful hints. I am very happy with my purchase and recommend it for anyone wanted to build or buy a greenhouse.

Great ideas for greenhouses

it is a great resource but it reads more like a what is a greenhouse. there is a good bit of types of greenhouses and history but I will use this as a reference to build my own. not really a how to build as much as a what a green house is. the plans are good and adjustable.

Review

“A treasure trove of early photographs, painstaking research and most of all, marvelous accounts of feckless wanderers and resolute settlers, roadhouse operators, and ranchers in the South Cariboo–tough cookies, bad apples and flashy dudes included! This well-written book shows how luck, land and the climate, good but often bad, solid homesteading skills or a complete lack of them, and the kindness and generosity among neighbours shaped all who lived here, for just a few years or for generations.”―Caroline Woodward, author of Light Years: Memoir of a Modern Lighthouse Keeper (Caroline Woodward)

An interesting and enjoyable read. But it needs a proof read. I'm 95 pages into the book so far and have found at least 3 glaring mistakes so far that anyone knowledgeable in astronomy should have caught. On page 86 it's stated that the planet Uranus is 30 AU distance from the sun. In Reality Uranus is around 19 AU and Neptune is at 30 AU. On page 91 is states that the Apollo missions gave us the 1st opportunity to see earth from 240 million miles. Actually that would have been 240 thousand miles. A 3rd one I found earlier but forgot to bookmark. Because of these I gave it a 4 star rating.

This is definitely a great introduction to genetics. It covers every aspect in this field such as the Mendel's Rules, why we have different blood types, Punnet tables, dominant and recessive genes, the role of mutations, the production of proteins using bacteria and genetically modified animals that are proteins factories for Human use, such as insuline, and much more. I thought I had a decent knowledge of genetics but now I feel more confident about it and this book really provide the right knowledge to be up-to-date in this fascinating and complex topic.

Well written and entertaining. Perfect for those who love science but aren't scientists. I learned a lot about this very interesting subject. We humans think we're so special but in the big picture the term insignificant comes to mind.

I purchased this book for my brother and he said that this book was very informative. It has all of the different theories on genes. It is worth the money I paid for it and the shipping was very fast!

I picked up this book after taking an online course (intro to astronomy) taught by the author. If you are interested to learn about near complete catalog of unmaned missions, and what we have learned from each, I would recommend a purchase. The author does a great job of using everyday language to explain some pretty high level concepts.

This was a very informative book, it contained detailed information on many different areas. The one issue that i have, was that the tables were very small and i could no effectively zoom in on them on my kindle. but it was an overall great book

My dad has always been kind of an amateur naturalist, and he has recently been reading several of the various books by Richard Dawkins. As a biochemist working in the biotech industry, I have always encouraged him to read a little bit about molecular biology and genetics, field which I believe are important to learn about in order to gain a more complete understanding of how life really works. Recently, he asked me if I could recomend a good book on the subject of genetics. I found this quest not particularly easy. There are many excellent textbooks on genetics out there, but these are not really what I would call "armchair reading." Of course any college general biology textbook will have an excellent discussion of genetics and molecular biology - but again, too hard-core. One excellent book on genetics is the "Cartoon Guide to Genetics" by Larry Gonick and Mark Wheelis, but this book was written in 1991 and is now hopelessly out of date for this rapidly advancing field. Then there is "Genetics for Dummies," but I thought the title of this book would be a bit insulting potentially. Anyway - I came across this book by Charlotte Omoto and Paul F. Lurquin. I would encourage anyone interesting in biology and genetics to pick up a copy of this extremely well-written little book. I think this book is absolutely perfect. It starts out with a short introduction on the history of the discovery of DNA, then goes into an introduction to basic genetics concepts, such as the use of the Punnett square predict genetic outcomes, recessive vs. dominant traits, sex-linked traits, etc. It gives lots of very nice examples of Mendalian traits in humans. In chapter 4, there is a very nice discussion of the molecular biology of genetics - which is such a beautiful theory that it is a shame that most people don't know much about it. Chapter 5 goes into the use of bacteria to make human proteins - an extremely important part of modern molecular biology research. Chapter 6 has a discussion about genetically modified foods. Chapters 7,8, and 9 discuss chromosomal abnormalities, mutations, and recombination - which is all very important for an understanding of human (and non-human) genetics. Chapter 10 is my favorite - it gives a very well written description of the Hardy-Weinberg theory of how genes propogate in a population. This is all tied in with the theory of evolution in chapter 11. Chapters 12 and 13 then go into newsworthy topics such as nature-vs-nurture and human cloning. All in all, it is a very well written book which everyone should read. My only criticism is that the figures are not as good as they could be. The authors need to hire a good artist to help them with the next edition! I think they're clear enough, but they could have been made a lot nicer. Still - I give the book a five star rating.Dave

Well-written and a great topic of discussion. Highly recommend!
