IF only we had more on each page about their childhoods!!! Wonderful artistic illustrations about each DIVA! I love the colors!

Leslie Gourse has written a fabulous introduction to the great female jazz singers.She's included Ella Fitzgerald (of course!), Bessie Smith and a host of others including currently popular singers like Diana Krall. Ms. Gourse is an excellent researcher and writer, and this book should be included in all school libraries.Highly recommended

My five star rating is for the book, not the subject pertaining to it. Neal Gabler has done a masterful job of presenting an incredibly well balanced synopsis of Walt Disney the person. I've read the negative Amazon reviews of this book, just for laughs. They hate the book because it would have caused them to change their opinions of Disney. Obviously they loved the man. Before I read the book I was a victim of the Disney Corporation spin machine that continues to this day to present its creator as the benevolent "Uncle Walt". I believed it. Now I see Disney for what he was. A visionary most certainly. Driving to perfection in whatever he attempted. But he was also a vile and contemptuous dictator in the studio. And something I never realized before, he never drew Mickey Mouse. A former employee of Disney's summed up the man beautifully when he said "Disney's true genius is in taking credit for other people's genius". So appropriate in describing Disney's climb to fame. He stepped over many people to get where he eventually got to. And he never gave those responsible for his fame the credit they so richly deserved.

Gabler's biography of Walt Disney is only for avid readers of history by examining all sides of this famous persons life, and at over 900 pages you have to be dedicated to press on into this well researched but ofttimes sad story.WARNING to die-hard D23 Disney fans... this is not the book you are seeking; because some of the personal struggles and business decisions you don't hear about are carefully described in these pages. They offer interesting stories of Walt, teach powerful life-application lessons about perseverance and creativity in a clever way that protects the fairy tale ending, while leaving out the dragons along the way.Hard reading, but explained a lot to me as a life-long resident of Orlando about how one mans driven desire really did change the world.

Having seen the terrific American Experience (PBS) two-parter on Walt Disney's life, I was interested to know more. This biography is very thorough and even handed, not skimming on criticism where it's due. We often forget that Walt Disney was a man before the name came to represent things. What we learn is that Walt Disney came from very little, never made it out of high school, and despite a few amazing successes, struggled to keep his studio alive following movies that failed at the box office. That those same movies are now considered classics that are integral parts of almost every Americans' childhood makes it almost unbelievable that they nearly ran Walt Disney out of the business of animation. All we know is the vast empire that exists today, but it's only because Walt Disney kept pushing forward in his desire to amuse and delight his inner boy in a way that also appealed to the broad need of most of us to have our stunted, immature selves likewise entertained with singing animals and amusement park fantasy lands. Neal Gabler does a great job capturing the boy, the man, the boy-man, and the man-child.Among fascinating personal details are Walt's distant relationship with his father, his somewhat naive idea of women including a marriage that seemed more convenient than passionate, but was faithfully maintained to the end of his life, Walt's warm and cold relationship with his brother and business partner Roy, and the death of his mother, for which he blamed himself.Gabler also touches on accusations often heard about Walt Disney of being a bad boss, a racist, and a Nazi sympathizer. Although he doesn't give Walt a pass, he does make sure to remind readers of the context of the times Disney lived in, and that there were no standards for animation and film workers as movies were just starting to find their feet in the 1920s and 30s.As a film history through one man's life, this book also reminds us that Disney innovated things we take for granted now-- things like sync sound in cartoons, color animation, camera animation stands that allowed depth of field, and storyboards. The world of movie animation would be very different if not for Walt Disney and the talent he fostered in his studio.

The truth was not hidden. Fluff was not added. Honest knowledge of what to expect and how to help is all I found.This book helped me traverse what we never thought we'd have to. I thank you, Mr. Marc Silver, â€‹for putting this book out there.The one area it felt to have fallen short was near the end - after "standard chemo treatment and breast augmentation." The book left me hanging for more. But, now that we're continuing with other treatments for my wife, I understand why as each patient is very different at this stage of treatment.

My friend was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and we found this book. This guy knows how to write and really hits the nail on the head - coming from a man's perspective. Both my friend with the cancer and her husband have really benefited from the insights and openness of this book.

I needed a book that was clear, understandable, and human. I was diagnosed with breast cancer just one month after becoming engaged. My future husband is not an avid reader, but I needed for him to have a clear picture of what he was taking on.This author has a great sense of humor while imparting the harsh realities of living with this disease from a partner's perspective. From a patient's perspective, I can tell you that he nailed it, and doesn't shy away from talking about some of the impacts and life-changing realities that your doctors will likely not mention to you or your spouse.Remember the loved ones in your life who are living the nightmare with you. They need care and understanding support on this journey too. This book pays tribute to that and gives them another weapon in their arsenal to help you fight.

I read this before giving it to my Dad who needed a little help in the caretaker position! My mom needed more help than him going to work to provide the insurance!(He thought that was what she needed) Poor guy didnt have a clue what she was going through, but NOW he does, thanks to his lovely, helpful daughter and this BOOK! LOL lets just say there where a few hundred sticky notes hanging out of it when he got it, just little notes of where I thought he needed to read to help her out! :) It wasnt his fault, she has just been taking care of everybody her whole life and he didnt know what to do, but I loved the book because it hits all types of personalities of the women that are going through this and yet gently lets the men know that their women need them in alot more ways than one at this point in their life!

This book is very helpful to any man who's wife as been diagnosed with breast cancer. It focuses on managing your new roles as a breast cancer husband. While a few of the anecdotes are somewhat dated, people (and our emotions) remain very much the same. For the most up to date technical information look elsewhere. But for solid, practical advice on how to support your wife in this unwanted battle against breast cancer, this book is highly recommended.

To all the husband's with a wife with breast cancer, you should read this book. For all the husbands with a wife without breast cancer, you should read this book too; that way you don't make the mistakes and fumbles that so many of us husbands do when you first those words..."I have cancer." Nothing can prepare you for that moment or the days that follow, but this book gives you a head start and a peak behind the curtain into what so many husbands, boy friends, and fiancÃ©s experience weekly when that Doctor reveals your worse fear. It's a great read from what to expect through the various stages of breast cancer.

Before I made a decision to retire, I decided more reading needed to be done on the subject. The vast majority of books available only address the financial aspects, they don't talk about how to wrap your head around the fact that you will no longer have the safety net of filling your time with work.I probably drove many of friends and family crazy with my constant questioning, when do you know you're ready to retire? My job was one that I liked and gave me much satisfaction, yet my baby boomer age was catching up to me. This book helped me to see that there is much more to life than just working. Not that working is bad, but if I wanted to do something besides work, I better do it while I still had my health, desire and time.Encouraged by this book to retire, I did a couple of months ago. Before I left my job, I agonized over my decision and the 6 weeks notice that I gave, dwelling on whether I was doing the right thing. I left my employer with a suitable replacement and was treated well by everyone in the great retirement party and gifts they gave me. Being able to retire when I chose was important to me and helped close that chapter in my life.On my first day of retirement, and everyday since, I feel like a tremendous burden has been lifted from my shoulders! Ok, I really liked my job and when I was working I didn't really see it as burdensome, but being set free from the yoke of work is a feeling that is hard to describe. I no longer have to please demanding customers, give employee reviews and correction or be concerned about lawsuits and workers comp issues. Do I miss work? No, not one bit!This book gives a ton of practical advice that I had been unable to find in my many hours of searching about retirement. I read this book twice before I retired and still read it for it continues to be uplifting and encouraging with great suggestions on what to do with life.I would encourage anyone that has even thought about retirement or is retired now, to read this book. Highly recommend.

This retirement book by Ernie Zelinski is different from most others in that it does NOT focus on how to save the ungodly amount of money you will need to live a life of leisure for potentially 30+ years. Instead, it focuses on what you will do with your time for those 30+ years. And that's exactly why I bought it because there are hundreds of books that deal with the money and very few that deal with the big question that we all must one day ask and answer: What the heck am I gonna do all day when I'm no longer working?I read this book about six weeks into my retirement, and while there are a few inspiring ideas, most of it is just a litany on the importance of finding a passion in life so you don't spend your retirement watching TV. (Duh.) And it's reiterated in umpteen different ways, making the redundancy rather boring. Zelinski cites numerous studies throughout the book to prove his various points but is extraordinarily vague on the sourcing, so one wonders about their legitimacy. A more careful, responsible and ethical author would have footnoted each of them with specific citations.In addition, he liberally sprinkles into the text fan letters he has received from readers of previous books he has written. Sometimes it felt like I was reading an ad for his oeuvre. But I slogged through it to the end--only to be rewarded with even more fan mail.I am being generous in giving it three stars, rather than two. There is some good advice in the book, but you have to wade through a lot of other stuff to find it. If you have no friends, interests, hobbies or activities you now do outside of work, then this book may offer some insight as to how to spend your newfound free time during retirement. But if you already have a life, so to speak, outside the office, don't waste your money on this book.P.S. The author brags that he failed college English 101 three times and yet has still managed to write many books. I assume he passed on the fourth try, but he should have paid closer attention. There are enough blatant grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the book to make this English major winceâ€”a lot. Where was his editor? Where was his old textbook from English 101?

I encountered the book accidentally and at a very timely moment - ahead of 'retirement' age. The really valuable aspect of this book is its lack of focus on traditional financial planning - in fact it turns that on its head. Rather it brings together a very broad range of issues more related to the development of the whole person and this was just what I was looking for. While the book has been around a long time now, it remains highly relevant. Zelinski has a great accessibility so the book is very readable. Not every section is relevant to every person and I don't always agree with everything the book recommends. But that doesn't make a blind bit of difference - there is ample information there for everyone to be able to find inspiration. Reading this book has set me on a path of investigation, motivation, contemplation and serious planning to escape from the traditional notions of retirement.

Basically suggests what all you could do with your life after retirement. It's mostly simple common sense such as 'go for a walk'. I was expecting more in-depth knowledge on advise with money. So if you are looking for suggestions as to what to do with your retired life, then this might be a good book. I can give give you a money saving advise retirement advise -- don't buy unnecessary books.

I've read "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" several times now (I've also taken the "Seven Habits" management course), and the book's powerful message never ceases to have a positive effect on nearly every aspect of my life.This is a book about organizational excellence, but with a key difference than most others on the same subject: Covey believes that the foundation of organizational excellence is personal excellence. The seven habits he describes in great detail are tools leading to that goal. They can be applied in nearly every situation in our lives, and, if successfully practiced, will help us to improve our lives at home, work and play. A word of caution, though: the book may not be for everybody; you have to be willing to face yourself honestly and courageously, and apply the seven habits daily, in order to become more effective.For the most part, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" is well written. Covey tends to "sermonize" in places, and his writing style is at times long-winded and a bit patronizing (a flaw common to many writers of management books who think of theirs as the "best way"). However, despite its stylistic shortcomings, the book's message is powerful and profound...for those who have the courage to accept it and put it into practice.

I finally decided to read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I had purchased it some time ago and recently determined that now was the time to read this self-help classic. What a COLOSSAL disappointment! I am amazed that this mediocrity is so popular. I found it to be little more than 1980s managerial balloon juice.From â€œparadigm shift,â€ to â€œthink Win/Win,â€ to (ugh) â€œsynergy,â€ there is no empty self-help clichÃ© left unturned. I should have stopped reading the first time I saw the word â€œsynergy.â€ (I get countless â€œbusiness proposalsâ€ in my email every day and, if I bother to skim any of them at all, I delete them as soon as the word â€œsynergyâ€ makes an appearance.) No word represents the trite emptiness of this book better than â€œsynergyâ€ â€“ except maybe the verb form of the word: â€œsynergize,â€ or the adjective â€œsynergistic,â€ or the adverb â€œsynergistically.â€ But they are all here. (The author also repeatedly refers to â€œthings that are learnedâ€ as â€œlearnings.â€)The book doesnâ€™t even try to live up to its title. There is no argument at all to support the idea that these are seven actual habits that real people have used anywhere in the world to achieve real success. In fact, these seven so-called habits appear to be nothing more than seven things that the author thinks are really good ideas, with weird examples of how they helped him deal with his kid being bad at baseball and also helped his kid learn the value of cleaning up the yard. The bookâ€™s title doesnâ€™t match the book itself, but then no one would spend their money on a book called, â€œThe Seven Things Some Random Guy Thinks are Really Nifty-Keen.â€Hereâ€™s some useful self-help/time management advice for you: do not waste your precious time with this book. There are dozens and dozens, if not hundreds, of better self-help books out there. Synergize your win/win paradigm shifts with some of those.

I rarely if ever leave reviews on purchases, but I felt the need to share this one. I've spent the past several years trying to figure out what I was doing wrong when it came to happiness. I had every reason to be happy, but yet felt this deep hollowness inside. I've tried all the positive thinking quick fixes, meditation, law of attraction, etc. Nothing seemed to click or "cure" this aching inside. I teach printmaking, and have been looking for some time for a solid general reference book for my students. This is the only book I have found that covers all the essential printmaking techniques, is up to date, and offers good examples of contemporary artists' work along with practical step-by-step info. I have many other wonderful books on printmaking but many of them are out of date in terms of health and safety (only covering the traditional solvent based methods), OR only cover new non-toxic methods without offering traditional options also, OR are promoting particular products and therefore more like advertizing. This is the only book that I've found that I feel comfortable giving to my classes. I do wish it wasn't so expensive (as printmaking classes are already expensive enough for students), but with the rental option on Amazon it is affordable for a class text.

This is a solid reference text, with a multitude of print processes covered. The authors explain each step, accompanied by drawn illustrations and images for each process. Very useful to keep on the shelf, especially in a classroom situation.

Full of illustrations, the artist's process and personality, so well written. Entertaining, inspirational, beautifully designed. This is a must-have for anyone interested in typography, logos, lettering, branding and so on. Jon Contino is authentic, a true original, a treasure! You will NOT regret buying this book!

A comprehensive guide to everything printmaking. My professor gave me the heads-up that the UK printing is a much less expensive alternative to the US printing, with the exact same content. I love this book. One of the rare ones I'm keeping after my classes are over with.

The book is extremely well-written, edited and thoughtful. I have a son who plays in AAU year-round and is one of those boys who regularly attends the national camps (EBC, John Lucas etc). The book shines a spotlight on why AAU coaches are so motivated to recruit the best talent for their teams and why they'll go to such great lengths to win. There is big money involved from the shoe companies and other sponsors. If you are a parent of an AAU basketball player you absolutely MUST read this book. Parents are being deceived by coaches and recruiters all the time. Spend $15, buy this book and educate yourself. The book is so well-written that even if you are already an expert and can navigate the murky waters of AAU w/out assistance this book is worth the read for the entertainment value alone.

Obviously, well written, story flows well. Only gripe I have is of the lead character/villain Joe Keller (I often wanted to stop reading because he's such a despicable human being, all in it for his own gain). He is borderline trailer-trash exploiting young, talented kids and their poor, single parent families (which he often times admits to when he's being honest, which isn't often). But he does have some good qualities: he's got the desperation and hunger (because when he literally started, he was basically broke) so he worked extremely hard, networked, constantly marketed himself and his product (his star player and team) and achieved goals he wanted to accomplish. Otherwise, he's a s***ty, know-little coach/leader (indecisive and just informed enough that makes him dangerous). He constantly berates his players and his erratic substitution patterns during games were a mind-jack(I prefer the f-word) and shows how little he knows and his lack of self control. I have no idea how this low life was able to manipulate not only the kids, but also the parents (some who were well-educated and financially well off). I would rate this book 5 stars if it were fiction, but because the real life main character is such a POS human being, I have to settle for 4 stars.

There was a time when the second best avenue to writerly acclaim (the best being investigative journalism) was sports writing, and Dohrmann seems cut from that cloth. He's a Sports Illustrated writer-Pulitzer winner - and, as this book demonstrates, a bit of an investigative writer himself.But a bit about the book.Dohrmann began following what he calls grassroots basketball, i.e., the entrepreneurial AAU system of pre-high school hoops. His main focus is a struggling coach, Joe Keller, and his basketball find, a young California kid named Demetrius Walker.Talk about patience: Dohrmann follows these two and a secondary cast of characters through some eight years, most of it through the kids' seventh and eighth grades. Keller, by Dohrmann's accounting, has a gift for recognizing hoops talent in pubescent boys, but his primary talent is the entrepreneurial one; he ends up rich from basketball camps and all its ancillary product and activities, leaving his boys to struggle toward high school and college.Dohrmann's main point here is that boys from less than desirable home lives are ending up as the means to the entrepreneurial end in hopes of rescue through making it to the NBA. As a result, they aren't coached well, aren't developed as pre-adults, and the sins of the coaches and other wheeler-dealers haunt these kids throughout their sports lives.While Dohrmann's writing voice is rock solid, it doesn't approach Grantland Rice's elegance. However, he clearly knows how to take volumes of data about these coaches, the boys and their families, and write it without it seeming an amorphous mass of data. Where possible he lets his characters talk through dialogue; as a result, you're drawn deeply into their lives, their sports journey, their trials and successes. When he resorts to backstory, he does so in a way that embellishes his the here-and-now, and he doesn't linger there long enough to lose the reader.In such an eight-year odyssey, and with the amount of detail at Dohrmann's disposal, it would be tempting to let one's self drift away from this story's arc, but Dohrmann's a disciplined enough writer to make such an ambitious project work. If his writing here has a downside, it's a minor one: he lingers too long over somewhat trivial matters near the end. But for tomorrow's hoops stars, today's fans, and this aging hoopster, it's an enthralling must-read.

One of the best books on basketball I have ever read, the scope of the book is staggering in its breadth and detail. Journey with the author and the star of the book for over a decade, through every corner of the prep basketball industry. This book immerses itself, and the reader, into the world of a young sports prodigy, showing how being anointed a franchise player too soon can change an athlete's life - for better or worse. It is a classic - Tyreke Evans and Russel Westbrook cameo.

AAU ball is a trip I played for a Reebok sponsored team called The TCAA Monroe Bulldogs in Monroe, Louisiana. We got a limited amount of tshirts , shorts and socks etc . Our coach had a different agenda he would sell shoes headbands and everything that he could sell that was Reebok. That was the Summer of 2000. It was a 16u team, we made it to nationals in Detroit. I heard some of this stories from other teams when we stayed in hotels. This was a great book.

Just the tip of the iceberg. George Dohrmann, an award winnng Sports Illustrated senior writer, does a great job of exposing the underbelly of youth basketball. You have to feel for the kids who become pawns for the power brokers tied to shoe company grassroots promotion money and major alumni benefactors "donations" to the tax exempt "foundations" of these same AAU coaches and organizations. Pretty naive to believe that all these elite athletes are going to play at the college level for only scholarships covering tuition, room and board, and a small stipend after coming up through organizations where they received gifts, clothing, cars,phones, and spending money, and maybe their mom's rent paid for by their AAU coaches and/or their AAU coaches agent buddies. Sad commentary on how the whole "high level" youth basketball industry - and that is what it is - an industry - has evolved on the backs of kids with dreams of making it in the NBA.

This is a book of photos, with an erudite and informative introduction by John Julius Norwich and various literary quotations thoughout--beautifully produced, elegant for any coffee table. The fact that all the photos are black and white is fine, because most of the views are so familiar that the lack of color gives them a different aspect from the usual London picture book. However, the photos tend to be a bit murky and clouded looking, often lacking sharp contrast that would bring out their drama. Also, one has to check the listing in the back of the book to find out the name of the building or the park in each photo--an artistic choice but inconvenient for the reader. It's a lovely book but just a bit disappointing.
