Review
"Amin's commitment to re-evaluating the unsettling practices of Genet's life represents a serious attempt to contend with the colonial, racist, and hierarchical legacies present in queer social forms. . . . Disturbing Attachments, by investigating the traction queer theory can have in contending with the compromises and failures hidden within its own field, demonstrates the potential for critical self-inquiry." (Rajat D. Singh Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide 2018-03-01)"There is no doubt that Disturbing Attachments is, ?rst and foremost, a work of and about queer studies, a fearless and scholarly probing of its disciplinary norms, its discursive limits, and its most embarrassing relations. It should be read by all those who care about the discipline’s future . . . and, most importantly, by those who care about its past." (Andrew Counter French Studies 2018-10-01)

Review
“Kadji Amin has written a crucial book, one that no one invested in queer thought or queer history can ignore. Elaborated through a reading of Jean Genet’s pederastic and cross-racial desires, Disturbing Attachments reflects on the permanent dissonance between politics and erotic and psychic life. Amin explores the contradictions of queer studies, which pairs its commitment to radical anti-normativity with a commitment to world-building, and argues that the field must deidealize without abandoning its attachments to queer coalition.” (Heather Love, author of Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History)“Kadji Amin upends foundational presumptions in queer theory by grappling with the passionate attachments that tether queer studies to the radical French writer Jean Genet. The resulting discomfort allows us to think differently about theory, politics, and queer relationships.” (Todd Shepard, author of The Invention of Decolonization: The Algerian War and the Remaking of France)"Queer studies desperately needs this book. Cogent, timely, and pathbreaking, Kadji Amin's work disrupts the genealogies of queer attachments while simultaneously interrogating, and at times relentlessly, the shape of the political in queer theory and the idealization of the queer erotic." (Sharon Patricia Holland, author of The Erotic Life of Racism)

An “experience of unease†looms over Kadji Amin’s Disturbing Attachments. Amin deidealizes what Queer Studies cherishes about Jean Genet, refuses to idealize those objects and gives voice to his pederastic behavior--that which has tended to be marginalized within Queer Studies. Amin’s display of Genet’s disturbing attachments successfully disturbed my attachments to sex, the erotic and intimacy and will continue to produce disturbance within readers.
Kadji Amin’s, Disturbing Attachments, cuts through offerings, in Queer Theory, of a fantasy driven utopianism of homoerotic relations by dipping toes into a controversial modern pederasty. Amin’s book sits in “attachment†in order to decode its affects on power dynamic play within the state—a queering to social dominance. “Attachment†and “disturbance†is also understood through genealogy and temporality—one recalling the other. Overall, Disturbing Attachments creates a space for pederasty to exist and to move in and out of queer futures.
This book had a good framework but seemed to be working toward a project of appeasing the academics. Well, if they are assigning it and loving it then the goal has been met. However, this text is the typical PhD dissertation turned book for the sake of it kinda book.I am sure the work is brilliant, just not sure if it needed to be written in such a mode.
Amin encourages a critical self-inquiry of queerness and historicity in order to move towards a queer history by suggesting what he terms deidealization and attachment genealogy. These are methodological tools to deflate our attachments to the history of queer pain only as injury. Amin himself does not make value judgements on controversial practices such as modern pederasty. Rather, he creates a demoralized landscape in which we may begin to talk about these practices and analyze their historical origins in order to work through disturbing attachments to histories of hurt. Amin shows readers that by deflating ideals, discomfiting attachments to historical contexts of race and geopolitics, can be revealed.
