This short work, along with Stratford Caldecott's Beauty in the Word: Rethinking the Foundations of Education, offers great hope for modern educators. I am excited by this fresh vision for an old and tried model of education.Caldecott exchanges the trivium word 'grammar' with 'remembering'. Clark and Jain use 'music' instead of the word grammar. Both exchanges go a long way towards bringing healing to the classical model which has been ravished by an over-emphasis on 'grammar' as poll parrot trickery.The Liberal Arts Tradition also includes a lively discussion on the place of the sciences in a humanities curriculum. This discussion made me want to read Euclid and study physics, a first for me.If you are a Christian Classical educator you cannot go wrong buying this book. It is a valuable addition to the great conversation.

Clark and Jain explain the inner logic of classical education in a manner fully consistent with the heritage of classical education with no ideological twists and turns and a level of scholarly inquiry that will enrich the classical renewal for a long time. Once you've read a book or two to introduce you to classical education and have started to ask the deeper questions about its history and nature, get this book and use it as a permanent reference.

Too much of what is said about classical education is vague and historically dubious -- as if waxing sentimental about the transcendentals and wonder, or just saying the word 'Trivium' frequently, will make you a better educator. This book is a great remedy for all of that.Clark and Jain have studied the concrete Western educational tradition carefully, and give an excellent view of the whole, along with a fantastic bibliography for those who want to read more deeply for themselves.They might be in a little over their heads on some of the more subtle philosophical questions that the book introduces, and the occasional use of Calvinist jargon may be off-putting to some readers. But these are minor reservations -- if you are involved in classical education in any way, or just interested in learning more about it, you should read this clear and well-researched summary.

I have read many books on classical education of various types and I appreciated how this book doesn't just address the intellectual aspects of a good education but addresses the need for students to have a well-rounded education, including body, soul, mind, and affections. All Christian classical educators, whether in a school or a home school, will appreciate the well-rounded advice in this excellent book.

This book does a wonderful job of acknowledging the great advances that have been made in classical Christian education by the likes of Dorothy Sayers and Doug Wilson, while also doing a great job of casting a vision for the next steps to be taken. The rediscovery of the Trivium has been wonderful, so now it is time to take the next step of rediscovering the Quadrivium. This book helps us move forward without losing sight of the gains that have been made in the past.

This will be one of my go-to books for explaining classical education. The authors interest with a number of contemporary sources, as well as the ancient wisdom on education (of course). They helpfully explain and illustrate the different aspects of the liberal arts curriculum through the PGMAPT mnemonic device -- piety, gymnastic, music, arts, philosophy, and theology.

I was introduced to the Christian classical model of education fairly recently and have since been looking for more information about this fascinating movement. This book expands on earlier writings (Rediscovering the Lost Tools of Learning by Dough Wilson and several others). What I liked was its overall clarity and thorough examination of the curriculum (content) of the classical model.The authors discuss the reasons to include Piety, Gymnastics and Music, in addition to the seven liberal arts, as well as Philosophy and Theology to unify all the rest (PGMAPT in abbreviated form).This a great book to check out if you are looking to build on a base of previous readings on the subject. It was quite academic (at least it seemed to be, according to this laymen!) and the footnotes were extensive if you want to pursue any of the topics discussed further.

I'm this is one of the clearest explanations I have found for the liberal arts as they should be taught. It gives the original contexts and usage of each of the parts of the Trivium and the Quadrivium. Because of this, I now have a much better understanding of what the medieval scholars meant by Music and Astronomy. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in classical Christian schooling.

This is not my first Mastering AutoCAD book. I've been working AutoCAD since 1988; version 2.6 on 5-1/4 floppy. I bought my first Mastering AutoCAD for version 9 and I have purchased updates ever since. This book can be used as a step-by-step guide for the beginner, or a reference guide for the advanced. Should you be looking to become AutoDesk AutoCAD Certified, this is the manuel to help you get there.Mastering AutoCAD 2013 breaks down each menu, submenu, and command for the readers understanding. Starting with chapter 1 each consecutive chapter builds on the one before it, introducing the reader to more and more complex skills. Referencing is easy enough utilizing the Index as a map.Let me add this. Although this book is for Beginner thru Advanced, it is a must that you understand and/or have a healthy background in Drafting and Design. AutoCAD is a wonderful tool, but unless you understand basic drafting skills such as placement, layout, dimensioning, ect, or if you are looking to simply draw a floor plan for yourself, you may want to look for a lesser involved book. If you are the professional drafter/CADD operator looking to enhance or update your reference library, this is the book for you.

The last copy of AutoCAD that I purchased several years ago had an extensive paper reference library included, but this was not the case with my copy of 2013, perhaps because it is a student version.This book goes a long way in filling the void. For me, it is easier to follow a procedure in a book while working on-screen with the application than using on-line help except for very minor operations.

I am a certified instructor and a university teacher and in both cases this book has helped me to prepare my instructor sessions and university classes. I would recommend "Not experience needed" AutoCAD book too.

This books seems to have it all. I plan on going through it step by step. I like the fact it comes with a CD ... For the price, it's one of the best. This book is also one of the approved books by autodesk if you want to get autocad certified.

Very good text book. I previously used auto-cad 2010. And had to update my skills for the newer release.Brian Benton, the co-author does video tutorials also. Excellent teacher. Unfortunately most video tutorialteachers talk waay too fast and ASSume you know a lot of technical stuff. Brian Benton on the other handspeaks as if you really were in a conversation with him.

This book has a lot of good information in it. I use this as a reference book. It's sometimes easier finding information in this book, than it is the AutoCAD wikihelp.

It was interesting to see the similarities and differences of the spindles and how yarn is spun with these devices.We have 2 American Eskimo dogs, and their double-coated fir, during their daily brushings, might make some lovely yarn.A book on making yarn from dog hair will be the next book that I buy to use in my knitting and tabletop loom weaving.This is a ‘have-to-have’ book for every person who deals with fiber arts and wants to make their own yarn.

It has shown me all I need to know about using the spindle. And I do respect the spindle now. I've been hung up over getting a spinning wheel, which are really expensive, thinking that's the only way to properly spin yarn. Now I know I can do so with my spindle.

I'm just learning hand spindling, and this book is a wonderful accompaniment. It is beautiful to look at, has good information on how to spin with various techniques and tools, and is full of fascinating history and lore from various spinning traditions around the world. Four stars because it is hard to learn a physical skill like spinning from a book. Not really the book's fault, but if you are trying to learn hand spindling from scratch I recommend that you buy it, read it for background, then watch some of the author's excellent video tutorials on YouTube. The combination can't be beat!

Sometimes it was hard to tell what she is doing in the pictures, but I understood more when I tried it myself.PROS - In addition to the most commonly seen spindles, unusual spindles like Navajo and Russian spindles are covered. Lots of pictures for both eye candy and of practical value. There's a chart helping you match spindle, spin speed, and fiber type for easier spinning. Plying is also covered.Franquemont covers many types of spindles (although I wish she'd covered turkish spindles a little more*). Supported spindles and suspended spindles. High-whorl, mid-whorl, low-whorl, no-whorl. She describes in detail how to get them spinning and how to increase the efficiency of your spinning. Franquemont talks about the science behind the spindle and how bits of fiber are transformed into yarn.If you've seen any of her videos on Youtube, you'll see how spinning is so natural to her. This book will help you be more comfortable with your own spinning (but you have to practice!).* Abby has a Youtube video just on turkish spindles

I've never spun before, and this was the first book that I purchased in order to start that adventure. Abby's name was recommended to me first though by a couple friends of mine whom have been spinning for awhile themselves, and their recommendation was excellent. I haven't quite finished the book yet, but it is so wonderful and full of very valuable information on not only how to spin, but some of the science and history behind it as well. It's an excellent read and one I recommend for everyone starting to spin!Also recommend checking out some of her videos on youtube, as they are super helpful in actually seeing some of the techniques and such that she talks about in her book, in a real demonstration.

I love spinning on my wheel, but for travel I use a drop-spindle. How nice to have the understanding of how and why this works so I can spin satisfying yarn and transfer the understanding to my work on the wheel. Excellent teaching/learning guide. And it reminds you you're working at a craft that was in use a couple millennia BCE.

Fantastic book for anyone considering the craft, or like myself, already using a spindle as their only means of spinning. Comprehensive and well researched, the author draws from her experience of spinning beginning at the age of six. Beautiful photos of spindles and fiber, add the sexy factor to something not immediately thought of as sexy;), and add to the inspiration I often look for to get my artistic juices flowing. I can't see anyone even slightly interested in the craft not enjoying this book. Ty for this book, and a pleasant transaction.

After having read Maxwell's other book…"Winning with people " and being well taught and inspired, I decided to read this book as well. I feel I am a better person for having done so. It is definitely worth the time, and I have recommended it to several of my coworkers.

I liked the concept of allowing yourself to be open in order to deal effectively with others. In order to become a great leader you need to open yourself to the possibilities or learn from others how to be better yourself

Good, but very much like other leadership books I’ve read. Most of the context in this book exist in most leadership books.

John Maxwell is one of the leading authorities on how to be an effective leader. This book contains a wealth of great examples and anecdotes to help illustrate his principles, but I found most of the principles to be based on common sense (but nevertheless very good reminders).* Treat others as you would want to be treated: encourage them, appreciate them, forgive them, listen to them, understand them.* In life you're either going to see people as your adversaries or your assets and that is how you will relate to them.* Be more concerned about making others feel good about themselves than you are making them feel good about you...don't try to sell other people on your, try to sell them on themselves.* The charismatic person will risk getting out of his comfort zone in order to make others feel comfortable.* Roadblocks to charisma are: pride, insecurity, moodiness, perfectionism, oversensitivity, negativism.* Those who are powerful in leadership understand that one of the key tasks of management is to find ways to grow people.* We motivate best from the other person's perspective.* Leadership is not a position that one is given. It is a position that one earns by proving faithful.* When a leader stumbles, others fall.*Etc.A great review of all the things that are needed to be a great leader - especially the chapters on being an encourager, loving difficult people and how to be a person who can handle criticism.I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from David C Cook in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

John Maxwell is one of my favorite authors. His writing style is clear, concise, and meaningful. This book is full of golden nuggets and worth studying.

To be successful in life we need to know how to deal with people. John Maxwell provides the tools and understanding to succeed with our relationships and lead a happy and healthier life.

Seeing that this has never been my strong point, I believe it has given me meaning insights and tools to better lead my team at work. Also to become a better team player with my family. John Maxwell brings home the essence of leadership.

Maxwell's writing style (actually from what I understand he has a "ghostwriter" who translates John's ideas to written form) is easy to read and makes a lot of sense. It's a common sense, practical approach to relationships. But as the saying goes, common sense isn't so common and that's why this book is a must-read for anyone looking to improve their ability to interact with people. It brings clarity to those sometimes nebulous "yes I know but can't quite describe it" principles of being a person other people want to be around. It explores what do other people have that makes us want to be around them and then looks at what makes other people want to be around us. And it's not based on slick techniques but on being genuine, caring, giving, and attitude. The stories, anecdotes, and quotes help make the material memorable. I also highly recommend John's "Everyone Communicates, Few Connect" book.
