DK changed their travel guides, and for the worst. They are now printed on thin paper (not glossy and durable like before), the typeface is fuzzy (not crisp like before), and the cover and binding are weak (not steong and durable like before). I always purchased DK for the beautiful glossy pictures — no more! The photos are now dull and washed out. And making it worse... the paper and printing has a terrible chemical smell. Seriously, what were they thinking? Yes, the books are lighter weight but at the expense of a tremendous drop in quality. I’m so disappointed and am returning both the Berlin and Amsterdam that I just purchased. I’ll do my best to find the old versions, even if they are used.
I own over 30 DK travel guides, as you can tell I like them. This new format sucks, I was going to send it back but decided to keep it to remind me to never buy another DK travel book in this format.
I really dislike the new format. The written contant is spot on. The new organization, lesser paper and phot quality is really “cheapâ€. It’s now a good travel guide and not a great one.
I love the DK tour books. They are absolutely full of information and photos and become like little dream lands for pre trip research and daydreaming. This one is no different, in fact Amsterdam may be the perfect venue for these guide books. All the DK strengths are here from the 3D overhead neighborhood and building graphics to an amazing block by block illustration of all the buildings on the Canal walk. Also there are suggested walks and itineraries, a beautiful pull out map which is complimented with lots of smaller specialized maps, photos galore, local dining suggestions and much more. It is truly wonderful.Two things seem changed from earlier guides. First the paper is no longer the rich feeling glossy paper that I am used to. The book is definitely more budget feeling with matte pages and a thinner cover. It should still hold up, but definitely a step below their traditional guide. And second it seems like more site details are left out with the note to check the sites web page for details. This will keep the book from becoming dated quickly I guess.Other wise I cannot recommend this more to people traveling to Amsterdam!
I've always been a fan of DK books and have dozens of them that I've accumulated over the years from 6 continents of travels. For me, the Eyewitness guides have been a great place to start - lots of photos that give me ideas on what to see and to take notes on and if I'm pressed for time, I live by the Top 10 books because they easily fit in a pocket and have nice bright maps. The 2019 versions of the DK Eyewitness Travel series just seem "off" - the paper seems thinner and feels weird to the touch, bright photos have been subdued and the book seems more cluttered.As for DK Amsterdam - the book is a good "first" book - if you knew very little about Italy and needed some ideas about where to go and what to see, this will give you a good start. But for logistics, Lonely Planet and online resources are the way to go. But it's still a good book, although they'd better go back to the older layouts and quality because this 2019 version is disappointing. The DK Top 10 Amsterdam would probably do better, and download the free Lonely Planet app to round out the trip.
I was a travel agent for 23 years - in my late, lamented youth - and prepared many European trips for clients. I wish then that I had had a book like "DK Eyewitness Amsterdam" to work with. These books, which come out yearly, are the best, most complete siteseeing guides produced today. They are mostly siteseeing because while they give a few suggestions for restaurants and hotels, the books' publishers realise that those things are covered by websites devoted to up-to-date info on dining and accommodations."DK Eyewitness Amsterdam 2019" is the latest in the European guide series. I think this year's book is a bit lighter than in previous editions. The front and back covers are thinner than before, and that makes a difference in carrying the book with you OR committing burn/slash on the book, cutting out the needed pages. That's what I was doing with the books when I travel.Now, as for the book itself. I'm planning a trip to Amsterdam and the book is so helpful The DK Eyewitness books cover the sites in great detail. They highlight small, out of the way museums and historic sites. The book is so detailed that a high school or college history professor could use the book in teaching the history of Amsterdam By the way, the book is also available in Kindle.
The eyewitness series travel books are outstanding. As a standalone product they are a great read, when paired with travel they are awesome. The binding pages and print are top, top, quality; made to be stuffed in a backpack, caught in the rain, and traveled with … hard – they are tough. Every detail has been considered, down to the size of the book, large enough to be useful, and small enough to fit in a large jacket pocket. In the back is a plastic waterproof, tear proof map of the city that can be carried separate from the book. A map of the city’s metro with instructions on how to use it is incredibly handy. It includes all kinds of practical guides about how the money works, how much to tip (by categories of jobs even!), and cultural advice. The book is indexed to quickly find what you need. Plans out excellent walks and tours of the best sites. Itinerates planned by the number of days you have are also planned out. The photographs as amazing and great value to the book, really helping you plan out what you want to see – just beautiful artwork! One of my favorite features are the exploded cut-out drawings of the famous buildings. Not only are the beautifully done, but they are incredibly informative and really help you have a better understanding what you will be seeing. I can’t recommend them enough. Excellent travel books!
